National Express helps students save with Amazon Pay

Now when Prime Student members book tickets for the coach service using Amazon Pay, they can get 15% off their orders.

As the saying goes, ‘It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey’. That philosophy is at the heart of everything the coach travel company National Express does: They’re on a mission to provide safe, reliable and great-value service to more than 21 million passengers every year across the UK.

With almost 1,000 destinations across the country, National Express is the largest operator of scheduled coach services in the UK and the preferred choice of university students on the go. Whether they’re going back home for the weekend, catching up with friends on another campus, or heading to the airport, National Express allows students to get where they need to go in comfort while staying within their budgets.

Pay in the fast lane

When National Express started looking for new opportunities to offer their customers a better user experience, they knew that they wanted to find a solution that addressed the two things that mattered most to their customers: great value and convenience. In 2017, they identified Amazon Pay as the ideal alternative payment solution to help them achieve their goal. By enabling Amazon Pay with seamless integration, National Express was able to offer their customers a way to use their familiar Amazon login credentials, and the payment information stored in their Amazon account, to quickly and safely complete their ticket purchases.

Prime Students get a 15% discount with Amazon Pay

At the end of 2019, National Express and Amazon Pay strengthened their relationship – and created an even smoother user journey – by developing a new initiative for Prime Students, which was the first of its kind on a global level. The teams collaborated on a new integration, offering a discount applicable to all fares – at first, it was 10% – to university students who selected Amazon Pay at checkout. To redeem the offer, Prime Student shoppers didn’t even need to set up a new account: they could simply use their Prime Student membership and select Amazon Pay as their payment method.

Within just a few months of launching the new initiative, National Express reported that the number of new or reactivated customers rose to 37%. This led the company to decide to increase the discount offered to students from 10% to 15%, successfully capturing even more customers.
